Hallee Starborn

Hallee Starborn, 61, full-time cashier at a Thurston County home improvement store

How I learned about Homes First: After I became a widow about nine years ago, I attended a volunteer fair at a local library to explore ways I might become more connected to my community. Homes First had a booth there, and I picked up information about helping the organization.

Why Homes First clicked with me: When I was widowed, I had been doing 24/7 care for my father-in-law, who had dementia. My husband had a sudden illness, then passed away. My husband's sister turned up to take custody of her father and liquidate his assets, removing him from his long-term home. I was asked to leave. It felt so raw, I wasn't sure what I was going to do. For the first time ever, I was unsure if I might have a roof over my head. Fortunately I was able to work through it, but I was forced to spend 50 percent of my salary for a tiny studio apartment. I now have a home, but because I lived through those times, housing is a key issue to me. I feel extremely grateful. Homes First is able to supply affordable housing for those who really, really need it. Secure, safe housing can be the key to holding your life together.

How I am involved with Homes First: I began volunteering in about 2013 and have been on the board of directors for about six years. I like to write, so one of the things I did was take on the newsletter that goes to clients. I'm told I was the one to get it going consistently. I liked to write about businesses that have useful, affordable services for those who rent property from Homes First; share recipes that were healthful and affordable for those on limited income; and point out free activities.

What I like to do for fun: Creative writing is my outlet. I like to write futuristic stories, plays, any number of things. It's how I work through things in my soul.

Why Homes First will receive my financial legacy gifts : It was a perfect fit for me. When I pass away I know that I will be sharing my estate with those who really need it and who will benefit from the security of having a roof over their heads. It's very freeing and liberating to have those arrangements made now.
